Dire Skates - Bay City Rollers
Intraleague End of Year Bout
Purple Pain vs Hell's Belles

The Bay City Rollers split themselves into two Intraleague teams and battled it out as Purple Pain (Napier) vs Hell's Belles (Hastings) in an 80's themed bout - DIRE SKATES on 23rd of November. Purple Pain took an early lead, but Hell's Belles came back with some huge hits and amazing jamming to close the gap, but it was too little too late, as Purple Pain took out the game 188 to Hell's Belles 115. Hastings Hell's Belles have already been calling for a rematch, so watch this space!

Derby Royale 2013

The busy Bay City Rollers calendar culminated in the skating event of the year, Derby Royale at the Manawatu Event Center, Palmerston North over labour weekend. Hosted by Swamp City Roller Rats, 16 teams battled it out over 2 days, 200 skaters supported by referees, non-skating officials, team photographers, fans and family had a blast over the weekend that eventually saw Auckland's Pirate City Rollers take the supreme title.
Bay City Rollers fought hard all weekend in all 6 of their games, there were too many highlights to mention. BCR placed overall in lucky 13th!

Bay City Rollers Grad Bout
Class of October 2013

In the land of Bay City derby you start Busking then become a Roadie as you hone your skating skills, eventually you ROCK.  Our newest Rockers popped their bouting cherry at an SPCA fundraising faceoff invite only event at Rodney Green Centennial Center Saturday October 12th.  One of the great things about derby is the support and encouragement for our newest skaters from the rest of the squad and they sure did rock and roll as our fastest and best mingled amongst them to see Team Black take out the win 232 to 191. As always our friends at the Thirsty Whale looked after us as the bruises came out, but be certain these awesome new derby darlings will be competing out in public real soon.

Skate Battle & Roll
Bay City Runaways vs River City Rollers

Ankle biters, big daddys, and dollys made up a fantastic, supportive audience 1950’s style at Pettigrew Green Arena on 27th July for a fun-filled night of live roller derby. Wanganui’s River City Rats rolled into the sunny Hawke’s Bay to battle it out with our very own Bay City Runaways.

BCR’s captain Porterhouse Skate, proudly stated that the team plays to their strengths, “We keep the trainings consistent and focused on crafting the base derby strategies then add in a bit of flair”. And they obviously do the basics really well coming out with a majority win of 87/244 points.

Both teams included “cherry poppers”, players competing in their first-ever bouts. River City Rollers’ Captain, Mel-icious Mayhem, revealed that it’s the only way for newbies to learn the game. When asked about strategies used to even up the score Mayhem explained she was impressed with how the team played. “You can’t exhaust your strong players”, she expressed. River City Rollers rate themselves as players in a team, one big family, and have been working hard on scrum starts and on their jam lines. Players who had been noted for ‘pretty mean plays’ included Gutter Wench, Ship Stirrer, and Tawh.

Also needing a mention are the Most Valuable Players from each team – World Waugh from River City Rollers and Kill Billy from Bay City Runaways. “Billy dislocated her finger in the first jam but proved what a trooper she was by taping it up and continuing to not only play but block brilliantly”, said Porterhouse. Both skaters were a credit to their teams.

Bay City Rollers would like to thank their sponsors for support with this event – Thirsty Whale, ZM and Sports Hawke’s Bay. Also a great big thank you to the fans who came along to support roller derby in Hawke’s Bay.

Final Score BCR Runaways 244 vs River City Rollers 87
